Rooftop party in Red Hook, Brooklyn

On a sunny Saturday a bunch of us meet in Hoboken on our way to see Eugene, Butterspy and Buzz Universe at the Liberty Heights Tap Room in Red Hook Brooklyn. Our transportation was a schoolbus courtesy of the ever-so-fabulous members of Eugene. We pile on and the party begins.

This was reminiscent of my childhood schooltrips to Turtle Back Zoo … except I had less whiskey and more chocolate chip cookies back then.

It was a perfect day for this. First up was Butterspy. Rocking blind into the face of the setting sun and BBQ smoke, their sunglasses offering little help. I had not heard them before, although I’ve known of the members individually from in and around the Hoboken scene.

Impressive songs and tight performance, too much effects on the vocals though. My advice … if you’ve got good songs, a great sound, don’t drown it with a wash of chorus and reverb.

I was getting hungry so I decided to check out the food. I have to say that the test of a good BBQ is how well they can do up a veggie burger. The hardcore carnivore in me admits that they did it very well. And, with a selection of choice imported, micro-brews and other tasty BBQ treats, this is an ideal spot for a summertime roof party.

Up next was the incomparable eugene. Always a good time when they play. Tonight there seemed to be even more energy than usual in the air. Those who have seen their pumped up perfomances in the past may find that hard to imagine. Even the members of eugene, who tend to be overly critical of themselves, admitted to this being a great show.

Apparently there was a 4th band on the bill, but I’m afraid I don’t remember them. I think I was down in the main bar trying to play pool with Ed’s [eugene] sister Irene. I won when she scratched on the 8-ball. I gave her the win anyway because, honestly, she was kicking my ass the whole time. So it was only fair. Then some 10 year old kid was hustling everyone. Li’l Minnesota Fats in the making here.

At some point made it up to the roof for the the jam-stylings of Buzz Universe. Nice melding of guitar, grooves and brass. I normally don’t go in for jam-bands, but these guys had the place hopping.

Then Dom and Jaime [eugene] and Dave [Butterspy] got up and joined in with the fun as we kept drinkin’ and dancin’ the Brooklyn night away.
