Star Wars: Episode III

Revenge of a Failing Prequel Trilogy

I finally got to see Revenge of the Sith last night. Admittedly it was better than the last two, which is not much of a stretch. All in all not a terrible movie, but sadly we all seemed to laugh the loudest at what were supposed to be the most serious moments. It still could not compare to any of the first three.

I finally got to see Revenge of the Sith last night. Admittedly it was better than the last two prequels, which is not much of a stretch. All in all not a terrible movie, but sadly we all seemed to laugh the loudest at what were supposed to be the most serious moments. It still could not compare to any of the films in the original trilogy.

Anikan is still a whiny little brat. It was especially amusing to me when, after adorning the Darth Vader outfit, he was then whining with the voice of James Earl Jones. The wise cracking droid workers got annoying as did that squealing giant iguana Obi-Wan was jockeying around toward the end. And what the hell was with General Grievous, that demonic warlord droid thing with emphysema?

The way they presented the names of the twins was a bit lame too. Padme may as well have said, “Ladies and gentlemen! Please put your hands together for Luke and Leia!” I thought a better way would have been to let Uncle Owen name the boy and Senator Organa name the girl. Lucas really missed the boat of dramatic potential on that one.

Finally, my whole point for seeing this was simply to be able to say I had seen all six movies in the theater when they were released. And now I have. Here’s to hoping for a release of the first three movies on DVD as they were released. Not those attempts to modernize them which I find as annoying as the colorizing of classic movies. If they were so widely popular the way they were made, why change them?

OK, so if Lucas wanted to fulfill some artistic goals the technology of the late 70s/early 80s could not handle, then why not take advantage the new DVD technology to release both versions. Think of the marketing potential. All those old sci-fi geeks (like me) would eat them up! For now, I will go back to continuing my goal to never see any of the Indiana Jones movies. Don’t ask me why, it just kinda happened that way.
