When Old Timers Try to Be Cool

“Only Tom was smart enough to add him as a friend first.”

I signed on to MySpace today to find that the latest featured profile was for Bruce Springsteen. My first thought was how cool that The Boss—who I’ve always respected—finally found his way to the world of MySpace. That is until I read what his management allegedly posted.

“Only Tom was smart enough to add him as a friend first.” Um … What!?

I signed on to MySpace today and found that the latest featured profile was for Bruce Springsteen. My first thought was how cool that The Boss—who I’ve always respected—finally found his way to the world of MySpace. That is until I read what his management allegedly posted:

Bruce Springsteen
Rock
New York, NY

The man himself Bruce Springsteen FINALLY gave in and started his very own MySpace Page for his new record coming out called Magic! Only Tom was smart enough to add him as a friend first, but he is a legend with only one friend. Go to Bruce’s Page today and show him some respect, add him as a friend, leave him a comment, and thank him for so many good songs.

OK … um, if this is for real then why in the hell would Springsteen’s management say that this man—who is more identifiable with New Jersey than just about anyone else—is from New York? I’m sure I’m not the only one who finds this both odd and somewhat offensive.

And sadder still is the line, “Only Tom was smart enough to add him as a friend first.” Someone in that office really needs to get with the program. Tom doesn’t consciously become anyone’s friend. It’s an automatic setting on MySpace and most people delete Tom once they start getting other real friends.

I’ve worked with people like this who try to fake out the world by talking about some hip new thing. The problem is they try to do this without knowing much about it other than the ‘buzz’. And by the time they get around to it, that thing is no longer new or hip and those they target can see right thru their feeble knowledge.

C’mon Bruce … you know you’re cooler than this!

Funny Update … I guess someone at Bruce’s management learned their lesson. They’ve re-written their MySpace promo taking out the bit about Tom being his first friend. It still says Bruce is from NY … so we still gotta work on that.
