Remembering George Harrison

From an e-mail I received on 12/04/01

I stumbled on your site because a friend from work is playing at the Soda Pop Shop and I was reading your review. When I checked into your home page I saw your tribute to George Harrison. It is a beautiful sentiment that speaks to the heart of Harrison's genius.

Remembering George Harrison

(February 25, 1943 - November 29, 2001)

When I was a teenager, and first really getting into playing the guitar, it was the flashy, fast, furious, effects laden sound wizards that were the most appealing to me. This was not an unusual position for a young musician to take.

Unity: Together For Tomorrow

Live at The Rodeo/Ristra Lounge Hoboken, NJ

I've often wrestled with the notion that what I do as a musician and a writer is, well, pointless and somewhat unimportant. I mean what is it really but me just being a big child play-acting?

Dangerous Misconceptions

My reaction to an email received on 09/19/01

OK, I understand the anger regarding the fact that so many terrorists were, are now and very likely will continue to be funded and trained by our own government. However, we must refrain from hateful statements that appear in the following email…

Battling Rumors and Hatred

While a great deal of camaraderie and unity has come from this tragedy, so has a great deal of fear, hatred and rumors. Many of you may have heard the stories of Muslim residents of Paterson, NJ celebrating after the WTC attack. These stories are UNTRUE. Just as it was a small faction of scum that perpetrated the attack itself, the same can be said about those spreading these false rumors.

Radiohead with Beta Band and Kid Koala

Live in Liberty State Park Jersey City, NJ

With my ticket acquired at the very last minute firmly in hand, some friends and I positioned ourselves on the crowded downtown train. I then strolled through the World Trade Center and on to a massive line to await special ferries to take us to Liberty State Park.

Dar Williams with The Nields

Live at the John Harms Theater - Englewood, NJ

I was in a very shitty mood this one particular Wednesday morning several weeks ago. Bad night's sleep, cut myself several times shaving, technical problems on the computer, I hadn't had a cigarette since a very dear friend took my pack away 4:30 Saturday morning in an attempt to get me to quit, etc, etc.

One Night in Asbury Park

Visiting Art Galleries on Cookman Avenue

While driving through the streets of Asbury Park, NJ, I could only speculate about its once vibrant reputation lost in its decayed ruins. Long gone are the amusements and vacation hotspots. Much of the music scene has diminished to only the landmark Stone Pony and The Saint. Both of which have had their own handful of operating troubles.

Live in Sinatra Park, Hoboken

Although a contemporary to the recent condo construction nightmares that have littered the once tiny haven of Hoboken, Sinatra Park is a welcome escape space. Set against a back drop of Downtown NYC, it has become a popular spot for biking, blading, walking, playing football, the occasional reading of a book and now music.

Going down to Baltimore…Going in an off white Honda

OK, so my Honda is silver, never the less, Soul Coughing's El Oso is the perfect companion for putting the pedal down along any open stretch of highway. Unfortunately, this is a sunny summer Saturday with the masses struggling like slugs to the Jersey Shore and/or Six Flags. So, the NJ Turnpike was far from open.

Soda Pop Shop

I'm always thrilled to learn of new places to see live music

Not only is the Soda Pop Shop new to me because I have never been here before, it is just an odd combination for this day and age. We've all seen Happy Days with Potsie singing at Arnold's. Now picture that with much cooler music.

A Short Story That Made Me Smile

by Kenyata Sullivan

I thought I'd drop in with a short story that made me smile - as most of y'all know, my cousin was friends with Joey and dated him for a few years, so when he was in town, he'd come by the house to say hi.
