9/11: Nine Years Later

I’m ashamed of my fellow Americans who’ve turned this day of horrible loss into a polarizing weapon for hatred, bigotry, and politics.

I have to say, I’m getting sick of asking, “What has happened to us?” after all these years. In the days that followed this tragedy in which family, friends, heroes, and strangers were lost, we vowed to come together. We vowed to never forget. Unfortunately, in the years that followed, we’ve been torn apart.

9/11: Nine Years Later

I’m ashamed of my fellow Americans who’ve turned this day of horrible loss into a polarizing weapon for hatred, bigotry, and politics. How dare you?!

What happened on that Tuesday morning nine years ago will be etched in my mind for the rest of my life. Seeing the second plane hit. Watching the towers collapse. Smelling the aftermath for months and months. Worrying. Never seeing friends again.

So before anyone (especially those who weren’t here) tries to use that morning for selfish political or religious gains, remember that real people of varied races and creeds died. And remember that real people of varied races and creeds ran selflessly into falling rubble to save lives at the risk of their own.

I know it’s hard for many Americans to shed their racist ways, but if you stop and read the names of all who died, of all who risked everything, of all who were affected, then you will see that this cult of hatred is weak and has no place in any memorial.

If you want to truly honor those who died on 9/11, do so by remembering that they were all Americans. We are a country founded by people, all from somewhere else with differing beliefs and views. You can still remember the loss while letting go of the hate.

Think about it.
