Christmas Mobile Mobile

The meeting of art, old phones, tech and cheer. This is the perfect time of year to create something so fresh using things so typically cold.

What a perfect time of year to create something so fresh using things so typically cold.

Something that is good for the environment (finding new uses for potentially toxic components) as well as for spreading the joy of the season (jingly music of chimes and tones ringing in the cold air).

The story goes like this; After a company-wide upgrade, an interactive agency in London was left with fifty old cellphones and a need for holiday cheer. After some brainstorming, the discarded cellphones were recycled into art, linked together with some computers and controlled by bit of custom software.

Viola! Mobile (moh-buhl) Mobile (moh-beel) was born!

If this was just a simple mobile made of cellphones that played programmed tunes, that would be impressive enough. This, however, is so much more. On display thru January, folks from all around the world can access Mobile Mobile via the web and play a tune to entertain (or annoy) those at Brick Lane Studios in London.

To compose your holiday masterpiece, go to xmas.lbi.co.uk. The sound isn’t that great, but it’s still pretty cool I’m listen to myself right now. Or, if you prefer, you can use Twitter. Just include #lbitree in a message and it will play you a tune.

The project was created by LBi (Lost Boys international).
