‘Coals to Newcastle’ Trailer

UK funk ensemble The New Mastersounds travel from Leeds to New Orleans to pay respect to the music they love after the devastation of Hurricane Katrina

Directed by Marca Hagenstad & Aaron Dunsay, the film ‘Coals to Newcastle‘ takes it’s name from an old English idiom meaning to do something redundant or pointless. Just like bringing sand to a beach. Think about it. Newcastle is historically known as a place of coal mining and New Orleans is the birthplace of funk and jazz.

However, The New Mastersounds took this trip from Leeds, UK to New Orleans for reasons other to show their funky wares to a crowd of eager fans. They wanted to pay respect to the legends who inspired their music and help the city so devastated by Hurricane Katrina. In doing so, they would win the hearts of the people and musicians.

I’ve worked with co-director Aaron Dunsay a couple of times over the years. Although I’ve not seen the film in it’s entirety (life sometimes gets in my way), I have faith in the talent of my friend. And judging by the trailer, I cannot wait to see this film.

You too should seek it out and watch it—and listen to the band. They rock!
