Big Sister: Debbie Carroll
Debbie is a 53-year-old African American woman who lives in the Bronx. She has raised two sons—who are now 33 and 34—and worked as a nurse for 20 years, before deciding that she wanted a change. She returned to school, obtained her masters in education and has been teaching 4th grade for the past 6 years, which she finds very rewarding.
Little Sister: Misty
Misty is a 10-year-old English girl of Jamaican descent. She is the second oldest of 4 children, and currently lives in Queens with her mother and younger sister. She attends 5th grade and likes to go to the movies, museums and on trips.
The Match:
Debbie and Misty have been matched for over 6 months. They have a great relationship and Misty loves spending time with Debbie. Whenever she speaks about her she gets a big smile on her face and says she has so much fun with her.
Misty tells Debbie about problems at school so she can get Debbie's opinion on her reaction to them. After Misty had remarked on Debbie's healthy eating habits one day, she has voluntarily started watching what she eats because she is overweight. Debbie says she has a lot of fun with Misty and can be herself with her.
Debbie and Misty have gone to museums, parks, movies and the mall together. Debbie has taught Misty about giving by having her pick out small presents for her mother and sister for Christmas to put under the tree from herself. She is also a wonderful role model for Misty, and by being open and honest with her, has helped Misty understand how to have a healthy relationship.
Misty calls Debbie almost every night to tell her good-night. Misty's mother has now applied for a Big Sister for her younger daughter, and has asked if we can get a clone of Debbie for her other daughter.
