Match Story: Joe & Tariq

Big Brother: Joe is a 31-year-old Korean-American who is originally from Iowa but currently lives in Carroll Gardens, Brooklyn. He is an auditor and has lived and worked in the city for the past seven years. He applied to become a Big Brother because while growing up he had a younger brother and enjoyed being able to teach and mentor him. He enjoys sports, going to the park, reading, writing and watching movies.
Little Brother: Tariq is a 9-year old boy of West Indian and Pakistani descent. He lives in Remsen Village, Brooklyn with his mother and older sister. His mother enrolled him in the Big Brothers Big Sisters program so that he can have a male role model in his life. Tariq is very inquisitive, energetic and has an insatiable curiosity. He enjoys soccer and other sports, as well as video games, bike riding and science/inventions.

Joe is a calm and patient individual who continues to provide a calming influence on Tariq while supporting him as he explores his natural curiosity. Joe is able to keep up with Tariq, and their shared interests have allowed them to start their relationship from a common ground.
They have gone on many outings, including the Brooklyn Children’s museum, Ice skating at Rockefeller Center and the movies. They have already been matched for a year and are looking forward to spending another year with one another.
Joe continues to be a positive influence to Tariq who would otherwise not have a positive role model in his life. Tariq taught Joe to be a kid again by watching movies that he would normally not select at the movie theaters.
