9-11 Four Years Later

Even with the passing of four full years, I still cannot bring myself to watch any of the footage from, or specials about, 9/11.

Even with the passing of four full years, I still cannot bring myself to watch any of the footage from, or specials about, 9/11. The images from that day and the many days to follow where I was glued to the TV burned me out a long time ago. That’s not to say my heart is callused and have no feelings. But being so close to it to the point of smelling it for months after … I just have not been able to watch since.

I can certainly see the need for these programs on TV. Families need to heal and we as a nation must never forget the horrible events of that day. Sadly though, in the face of our latest tragedy Hurricane Katrina, it is clear that we have not learned all that much.

For example; my friends in the band clueLess were scheduled to play a Katrina Relief Benefit at Willie McBride’s in Hoboken. When they arrived they were told that the benefit was preempted so that the patrons could watch opening day of the NFL. Oh sure they could play after the game, but that would have been after midnight. By that time, most of the patrons would have left for the night. Where is the heart people? Would it have been so hard to watch the game with the sound off? Let the bands play and maybe collect some money in the process?

This is just sad. The fact is Americans have always had a severe short term memory disorder. This is why we are no safer today than we were four years ago nor are we any more prepared for handling the devastation of a disaster. Be it manmade or natural. This makes me both sad and afraid. Wake up America! Haven’t we learned anything from our own history?
