A Return to Desmond’s Tavern

What’s this? A cleaner version on my favorite dive? Our lovely waitress assured me all that the new outward appearance was only temporary.

My friend Devin was visiting from DC, so we decided to pop into our favorite spot Desmond’s Tavern (433 Park Ave S, NYC). I hadn’t been here for several months. Walking in I was a little disturbed by the new, clean veneer. Oh sure, the floor was still uneven. But now it was a shiny, faux-parquet finish with no discernible cracks to warn walkers of the dangers ahead.

The old TV barely balanced in the corner was a warm reminder of the Desmond’s of old where we dodged dripping water from the warped, cork ceiling. The giant, pristine mirrors were a surprise as well, having for years been hidden behind faded, tattered banners and flags.

Our very lovely waitress assured us that this new outward appearance was only temporary. They needed to paint the place and the wall coverings we came to love over the last couple of decades would be back. I sure hope so. This new cleanliness seems to be attracting a more fraternity/sorority crowd better suited for Rockefeller Center or downtown Hoboken.

Of course none of this will stop me from coming here. I’ve been coming here so long that I can smell it in my sleep. The best Guinness in the area, still served in Imperial pints. Unlike other Irish pubs in NYC who have reduced the size of their pints. It’s a disgusting new habit that frankly makes me sick.

Buy backs and smiles and great conversation makes the staff here among the best in town as well. The changing decor could not change that.
