My Very First Video Edit

My latest attempt at expanding my skill set. A lot of the more complimentary remarks about the video are, not surprisingly, coming from women.

When the web designer/videographer at Men’s Fitness magazine (where I’m employed as a web producer) left, I took it upon myself to takeover the duties of editing their videos. Before you ask, the answer is no. I had no idea what I was getting myself into. I’d never edited video before, but it was for that very reason that I took this on.

With the future of publishing in turmoil and therefore the future of my career as well, I figured it wouldn’t hurt to add new skills to my resume. Plus, in times when things go bad in life and the wind gets knocked out of my sails, I tend to thrive on new challenges. Partially for the distraction from the uncertain.

With that in mind, I asked my coworker Erin Medley (who shot a good portion of the video) for some pointers. Off I went, fingers crossed and eager to learn. Diving into Final Cut on a Mac laptop, I tested my eye for finding the right places to cut and figuring out a proper choice for the music.

With a subject like UFC Champ Georges St-Pierre, I really wanted the video to be action packed. Plenty of kicks, punches and fast moves ripe with quick cuts and intense music. While there apparently were some explosive moments, those never made it on to the video due to a scheduling problem.

Instead, the mood of what was captured on the video was inadvertently set by our photographer Roger Erickson. He had St-Pierre move in a sort of slow-motion to better capture certain poses. That left me to create this playful, flirtatious video that’s a bit more for the ladies (and a few guys … you know who you are). Nothing wrong with that. Hence the long, drawn our disrobing scene.

The feedback has been positive so far. A lot of the more complimentary remarks are, not surprisingly, coming from women. Overall, I’m happy with the results. And I bet St-Pierre doesn’t mind being ogled by the ladies one bit.

I’m a big UFC fan, even though the video was not action packed. Plenty of kicks, punches and fast moves ripe with quick cuts and intense music which would of been cool, you still captured a relaxed mode and the editing was on point, nice job.
