Not exactly the type of honesty I was looking for, but…
As many of you know, I despise the usual game of storytelling and sound bites that has replaced true honesty in politics. And yes I understand it’s been this way since man first discovered the power of hierarchies. But what happened the other day really takes the cake.
Representative Albio Sires mailed out this typically glossy, over-sized ‘flyer’ bragging about all the good deeds he’s done in the world of New Jersey politics. You know … the usual, “I’m not really saying anything but I’ll use sensitive issues to get your attention.”
- Protecting education
- Supporting veterans
- Providing better health care
- Consumer protection
- Standing up for working families
- Enacting 9/11 Commission recommendation
And just as I thought this was nothing more than rhetoric on wasted paper, I saw this little blurb near the address label. It read. “This mailing was prepared, published and mailed at taxpayer expense.” Now I have to say that I was impressed by the honesty, but pissed off at the complete misuse of my money.
If this guy wants to brag about his work, let him do it on his own dime. After all, there’s no need for him (or anyone) to be sending this out at this time. It’s not even an election year. So on top of being a waste of taxpayer money, it’s a waste of paper, ink and energy.
My advice to Mr. Sires is to spend more time actually working on those things rather than telling us about them. After all it’s the action that matters, not the message. Especially if he’s going to make us pay for spreading that message.
