The term legend gets tossed around a lot. Sometimes fitting, most times hyperbole. But in the case of Sly Stone, the word doesn’t come close to defining the man. In a short-lived, meteoric rise to fame, his contributions to the world of music cannot be overstated. Also his statements on race and gender equality came to life with the very formation of The Family Stone. A massive band of diverse musicians that made a gloriously celebratory, revolutionary, and inspirational funk.
In a statement from his family:
“After a prolonged battle with COPD [chronic obstructive pulmonary disease] and other underlying health issues, Sly passed away peacefully, surrounded by his three children, his closest friend and his extended family. While we mourn his absence, we take solace in knowing that his extraordinary musical legacy will continue to resonate and inspire for generations to come.”
