New Abstraction Art Show

Artist Greg Amend returns after a ten-year hiatus

An apropos name. Bright colors, repeating (but not really) patterns and mixed media toyed with the eyes.

Artist Greg Amend returns after a ten-year hiatus

The night started off with long-overdue drinks at Inc. Lounge (224 W 49th St, NYC) with my friend Liz. We were on our way to Raw Space (67 Carmine St, NYC) to see the art of Greg Amend and Joseph Stabilito.

One thing that struck me about the bright glass and concrete Raw Space–thanks to the four drinks at Inc.–was the suspicious lack of toilets. Total number: 0. I did not partake in much of the complementary wine.

‘New Abstraction’ is the right name for the show. Both Greg and Joe work in the realm of imagination that makes you stop and question what it is that you’re looking at. Do I like it? Do I hate it? In the end, it doesn’t matter because you are looking.

Bright colors, repeating (but not really) patterns, mixed media and such toyed with the eyes. And the light-hearted personalities of the artists and the many admirers made this show a pleasure.

We ended our night with a couple more drinks and a much needed run for relief at Mr. Denehy’s (63 Carmine St, NYC). It’s a cool looking Irish pub. I’ll have to give it a more in-depth analysis at some future point in time.
