Hoboken Film Festival … in Teaneck?

Can someone please explain this to me? If ever there was a blazing example of an ever-dwindling appreciation of culture in Hoboken, this is it.

Can someone please explain this to me?

Seriously, why is the Hoboken International Film Festival taking place in Teaneck, NJ instead of …well … HOBOKEN!? Yes, I know it has been mainly in Teaneck for a while, but that fact is just as baffling to me. I was so proud to know that at least part of the 2009 festival took place back in Hoboken. I thought perhaps whatever snafu that caused it to be held out of town had been resolved.

That is, until this year’s festival was announced … Back in Teaneck!?

If ever there was a blazing example of an ever-dwindling appreciation of culture in Hoboken, this is it. You mean to tell me that no venue would was available for this festival? DeBaun? Monroe Center? The Elks Lodge? Maxwell’s? Even the new movie theaters (for crying out loud)!? Hoboken could not make this happen?

And who says a film festival has to be in one single location anyway? Wouldn’t it be better to have it scattered thru the city, giving people the chance to discover new places and new things to do? That would be good for the community.

Speaking of which, what really ticks me off is the promotional video being used to hype the festival. It’s from last year and features our former Mayor Roberts talking about how great this is for the community. And in 2009, maybe it was good for the community, but in 2010 it’s only good for Teaneck.

It would be like the Tribeca Film Festival taking place in Queens. Or Cannes taking place in Lyon. It makes no sense to me.

Bring the Hoboken International Film Festival back to Hoboken in 2011!

OK, I’m done venting. If you would like to go and support the filmmakers, here are the details for this year’s event.

When: June 4 – 10, 2010
Where: Cedar Lane Cinemas Teaneck, NJ 07666
Hosted By: Jackie Martling
