Weehawken, NJ artist Sean ‘9’ Lugo combines acrylics, spray paint and magic markers on an unusual medium. Actual street signs. Yield, stop, NJ Turnpike, Route 9, Garden State Parkway, etc. Depicted in the paintings are images of endangered animals along with the estimated number of how many are still in existence.

The work is both beautiful and compelling. Stark realism combined with chaotic spatter on everyday items implores the viewer to see the reality of man’s invasion of nature.

This time-lapse video shows the making of the piece shown above.

‘Signs of Extinction’ will be on display at Northern Soul (557 First St, Hoboken) thru the end of August. The show was recently featured on Channel 12 News.

Lugo will donate a portion of the proceeds from any painting sold at Northern Soul to the World Wildlife Fund. So go, check out this really cool art, grab a cold beer and maybe do something nice for the world by buying one of his paintings.
