Souvenirs by Michael Hughes

A fun collection of reality meets kitsch. The concept is wonderfully simple, but the execution takes patience and steady hands (and eyes).

Michael Hughes likes to travel (apparently). Judging from his Flickr page, he does it quite often. Digging deeper, I found that he is a man who has spent much of his life documenting the world thru inventive photographic projects.

One of the more popular has been Souvenirs which began back in 1999. I’ve seen imitators around the web who fully credit Hughes for the inspiration.

I wonder if Hughes travels around with his pockets filled with souvenirs in search of situations in which to shoot them. Or does he seek out the situations first? Either way, the results are amazing in their accuracy and whimsy.

NY’s Time Square.

Yes, that is the Naked Cowboy in the background. Apparently he demanded a $2.00 tip for being in the frame. Did you know this character makes upwards of $200,000 a year getting those $2.00 tips from eager tourists? Insane!
