The Coffin Daggers @ Maxwell's

[SOUND]

Everybody's gone surfin' ... surfin' Hoboken

Well, ok ... not really ... because surfing in Hoboken would be quite dangerous. You could hit an unsuspecting realtor coming out of a nail salon on her way to a Chinese food place before stopping into a deli to buy a lottery ticket in the hopes of winning money so she can buy some champagne at the liquor store. (God, I'm outta breath).

But we did have the soundtrack for it at Maxwell's (1039 Washington St, Hoboken) thanks to The Coffin Daggers. Drummer Pete Martinez (who also plays with Stuyvesant) had sent me an email a few days earlier asking if I would stop by. With the way I'd been working lately, I was happy to hear the show was starting close to midnight. Anyway, he was worried that the band would not draw well, and since I live just a block away, how could I refuse?

Now I don't know if that concern was a case of modesty on his part or if the band was truly not sure how they'd draw ... but when I walked in, the joint was absolutely packed! Yes there were other bands on the bill (who I missed, sorry), but to be the final band going on that late in Hoboken and have folks pressed up to the stage yelling out the band members' names was pretty fucking impressive.

Also impressive was the psychedelic-surf-punk that twanged and growled its way thru the room. Imagine the sound like an oil-stained garage on a hot summer day. You know, it's dirty, it's grimy and it's loud but in the end Martians roll up in style to an all night beach party in a pristine hot rod. I was also thrilled to hear a quickie tribute to Jimi Hendrix in the form of a few bars from 'Third Rock from the Sun' spliced in toward the end of their last tune.

Beat, distortion and tone blended to bring that big, dramatic sound needed so gold bikini-clad dancers can party in the sand. Of course there were no gold bikinis out tonight, it was kinda cold. There was plenty of bobbing and moving ... some of it by me if you can picture it. Although it's probably better if you don't.

Speaking of pictures, check out my gallery.
