Tuesday @ The Goldhawk

[SOUND]

June 19, 2007

Highlight from The Peoples Open Mic

There are a variety of reasons why I love going to The Goldhawk (936 Park Ave, Hoboken). To see friends, have a few drinks, it's only a couple of blocks from my house, talk politics, pretend to know how to play darts, etc. But most of all it's to discover new music on Tuesday night.

An amazing open mic community was started many years ago here and, despite the numerous changes it has undergone, it continues to astound me. I can usually depend on a few folks that I know to impress me with a new song or two, but I am always amazed at the new talent that catches the attention of my seriously jaded ears. Tonight was no different.

I walked in to what I thought was the featured act. A sadly off-key and extended version of some Pearl Jam cover. I told myself that, although the timing seemed right, there was no way this could be the feature. I was beyond relieved to find out that the person I was told to see had yet to play. What I saw was just our host Dave being nice to someone who was celebrating his birthday. Phew!!

The real feature was Sean Kiely from Square Wave Punch. His first song caught my attention with original lyrics and melody hovering over percussive guitar. I could definitely hear a distinct Frank Black influence here. With each strike of the strings and belting of some emotionally charged outburst there was the contrast of a softer, more quirky sound that would not be far behind.

The real strength in his performance was evident in the fact that he won me over. By the time he was done, my jaded self was tidily defeated and I was a fan. As were many delighted folks in the bar. I think Sean was a little overwhelmed but he'd better get used to it. Something this original is bound to inspire one reaction or another. I look forward to catching the full band.
