Embrace your fear of clowns and your love of rock

I just saw a post on MySpace from one of my favorite WE Fest alums. The hardest rocking clown band ever Punch Drunk Monkeys are returning for a special live performance. On Saturday July 26, 2008, PDM will be rocking with a slew of other bands at Magic City Music Hall in Johnson City, NY.

Since forming on Halloween 1994 in Binghamton, NY, PDM has worked to rail against the sanctimonious seriousness of commercial rock. Originally thought of as a ‘mock and roll’ band (their words, not mine), they developed into a force to be reckoned with. Of course a huge helping of ‘mock’ remained.

Their shows spiral into warped big top mayhem, often incorporating larger-than-life props. Oh and it can get pretty messy as the crowd is encouraged to throw back at Crappy the Clown whatever he throws at them. You may get pelted with food or sprayed with whipped cream or more.

All that aside, the one thing I have to say about PDM is they are a solid, kick ass band. Heavy and hard, there may be humor in the concept, but these guys can rock. If, like me, you cannot make the 775+ mile drive (or however far away you may be) to upstate New York that weekend, here is a video from a couple of years ago to give you a feel for what you’ll be missing.
