Highlights from The Peoples Open Mic

The crowd tonight was largely comprised of newbies who at times needed to be coaxed into keeping quiet and paying attention. Still it was nice to see the place so packed with fresh faces. It's actually something that happens more and more proving my argument that there is absolutely a market for live, original music in hoboken despite what the city or real estate developers may think.

Currently living in Los Angeles, singer/songwriter Eric Schwartz had recently performed at The Goldhawk's regular Writer's Hang. Since he was still in town, Peoples Open Mic emcee Dave Entwistle invited him to showcase a few songs tonight. His first number was a soulful ballad with a message everyone in a band could relate to, "Who is gonna fuck the singer?"

It was his last song that garnered the biggest reaction with its refrain, "Clinton Got a Blowjob." With the talk of impeachment hot on everyone's mind right now, his words were quite poignant. Apparently he wrote this over a year ago and has not felt the need to update the lyrics. It's scary how long we've been crying out about the crimes of Bush and Cheney.

What's worse...starting a war
Or keeping your Cohibas in a human humidor.
Who got impeached? And what for?
Oh right...Clinton got a blowjob

Read the rest on Eric's site where almost every line about Bush links to stories backing up the accusations. Though delivered with humor, the truth behind the song is both fascinating and frightening, even for those of us who've felt the same way for years.

The other treat of the night came from Hoboken locals Lloyd United who were the featured act. Readers know that these guys are favorites of mine. Tonight they pulled out a few new tricks from their bag. Pirate hats, eye makeup and the oh-so-clever use of a wah-wah pedal on Lloyd Gold's ukulele to name a few.

If I have one beef it would be when Lloyd United tried to rev everyone up with a rendition of 'Saturday Night' from The Bay City Rollers. Now I do understand that most of these people were too young—or maybe not even alive—when this song first charted. Or maybe they thought it came from that Mike Meyers movie ('So I Married an Axe Murderer'). But come on people! You can spell ... can't you?!

S-A-T-U-R-D-A-Y Night! I mean ... the sing-a-long is a simple enough concept. Don't get me wrong, for the most part the crowd was a good one. I just didn't understand the whole 'deer-in-the-headlights' thing I was seeing. On a side note ... I can safely say that it was the Bay City Rollers' Saturday morning TV show and one particular incarnation of Dr. Who that are responsible for my affinity for long, multi-colored scarves.

The night ended with a bunch of us singing Beatles, U2 and finally Pink Floyd. When we broke into Astronomy Domine, two things became perfectly clear. Only a bunch of guys could stand around late night in a bar singing an old Syd Barrett song and be impressed (practically giddy) with it being played so impressively on an acoustic guitar thanks to Fen of Lloyd United.
