I walked over to Maxwell's on this night to celebrate
Stuyvesant bassist and top-notch Hoboken bartender Brian Musikoff's
birthday. That and I really love this band with their hard-pop
sound and boundless oomph (yeah ... I said oomph).
I was in for a couple of pleasant surprises tonight. First
up was Boy/Girl whose line up is, well a boy on guitar and
vocals and a girl on drums. But that is where the ease of description
ends. Theirs is a sound of spastic anger and dysfunctional
brilliance. I was immediately drawn into this screaming aural
creep show.
After the fun and wonder that is Stuyvesant effectively entertained
me, up came The Swingin' Neckbreakers. Though this Trenton,
NJ band has been around since 1992, I'd never been exposed
to their heavy and precise garage-rock onslaught. Their philosophy
was spelled out clearly in the refrain of one tune 'It's
a God Damned Rock n Roll World'.
All of this with plenty of beer in my belly made for a very
fun night indeed.
