An intimate celebration with friends at Candela Candela

Candela Candela (92 2nd Ave, NYC) is a little bit of Cuba mixed with a splash of old Europe set in the no-longer-so grungy East Village. Plenty of candles, melted wax, dark wood, old photos and mirrors set the church meets bistro feel. Of course the bright blue awning with cartoon-like lettering outside seems way outta place.

With bottles of champagne at the ready, plates of tapas (I didn’t eat so I can’t vouch for the food, but I did hear mixed reviews flurry around the crowd) and the random mojito, a small group of friends gathered in the back room to celebrate some new music. Marc Alter is a singer/songwriter with a split personality. On one hand he has these simple, catchy songs. On the other, what he calls his more ‘cerebral’ view. This new CD called ‘Anomie’ showcases the two.

The title means a state or condition characterized by a breakdown of social norms, as in the case of uprooted people. Thru a jerryrigged mic stand and a tiny amp, Marc presented his art in a stark, makeshift manner. An interesting vehicle for the dark, atmospheric sounds found on the CD, reminiscent of the experimental English sounds of the Seventies with a modern twist.
