I wasn't sure what to make of these guys as they took forever
to set up. A beat eventually came from the drummer who looked
like the old hippy father of Joe Walsh. Off to the side a
DJ started scratching. This was getting interesting. The band
eventually grew bigger with the addition of a large 70s rock
lookin' dude on guitar. We called him Leslie East. Then came
the horns as the funk grew funkier.
More kept coming and I realized my first impression of them
being some jammy blues band was way off. In came this tall
Asian guy with a bass kicking into a serious slap solo. The
funk grew funkier still.
In came more guitars, horns and this one cat that I thought
was simply the emcee of the night started wailing on a sax.
Up walked a vocalist and by this time there were ten guys
on the small Bitter End (147 Bleecker St, NYC) stage.
A girl at the bar told me that they were this Prince meets
Wilson Picket cover band. I thought she was pulling my leg
until their jam flew into a seriouly hot version of 'Sign
O' The Times'.
As much fun as this was, by 2:00am, I really had to get home
to sleep. On my walk to the train, I wondered how long they'd
keep playing. It seemed as though they could go all night.
