Each year in October, Chris ‘Gibby’ Gibson of the
band High Speed Chase throws a massive birthday party for himself
called ‘Gibbypalooza’. For years this event was
held at CBGB in NYC. However, since last year it has been rockin’
Maxwell’s in Hoboken.
Tonight’s festivities also saw an historic reunion
of High Speed Chase who had actually called it quits earlier
this year. One old face and one new face joined the lineup
for this monster of a set. Original HSC drummer King and ex-Slush
Puppy bassist Cory.
Most of the other performers on the bill are local favorites
who I have seen and written about many times. Except for the
Beggerstaffs. This was my first exposure to their eighties-flavored,
Brit-pop style.
The night would evolve into an after party in the basement
of the Hoboken Elks Lodge. Cheap beer, revelry, music, ping-pong,
pool and poker made for the perfect setting for we the drunken
rockers to mingle with lodge members and regulars. The end
came with the prerequisite bad food at the Malibu Diner. It
is such a shame that we don’t have a better late night
eatery in this part of town.
