Dubliner Gives Up on Music (WTF)

Just when I think I can count on a savior…bam!

Nov 3, 2009: This cultural roller coaster is starting to make me sick.

Not long ago, I told you all about how the loss of music a legendary Scotland Yard had transformed the nearby Dubliner into a musical savior. And although music has seemed to return in a small way to Scotland Yard, the controversy of it’s initial loss kept the second floor of The Dubliner humming.

Now, out of nowhere, management has decided to nix all music at The Dubliner stating that it just doesn’t fit with the venue. Nothing could be further from the truth. Oh sure, maybe the place wasn’t jam packed every night, but what live venue ever is? But to say music didn’t fit is just wrong.

So, here we have yet another venue missing the point. Suck the culture out of a city and you suck the life out of a city. It may seem as though everyone is happy with a cleaner veneer of quiet strolls amid gumdrop trees and lollipop fields, but at some point, they’re gonna want music, art, life. This can be seen in the fact that people do go out and seek these things.

Tonight we sought it out and we found it. Musicians are everywhere in Hoboken but places for them to play are dwindling. The roller coaster continues but with way more dives than climbs and far fewer loops. When will it end?

Yes, I get it. The business of this area is business. I’m not naive, just hopeful. Give us a Monday or a Tuesday somewhere where we don’t have to worry about being displaced again. I promise people will come. Maybe not in droves, but more than on any other Monday or Tuesday.
