I have to say, I’m seriously one of the lucky ones. I count my blessings every day since Hurricane Sandy ravaged my home state. My home was undamaged. My cafe too was spared any physical damage. Sure we lost power for a week and the loss of business was devastating. However, I have a home and my health. The money can be restored. Others were not so lucky. And for that I am grateful.
Saturday Nov. 17 was originally scheduled to be a night of awards and ceremony. After a quick discussion with my Hoboken Music Awards partner Dave Entwistle, it became obvious that, in this time of struggle for so many of our fellow musicians, we should put aside the handing out of awards and concentrate on helping those in need. So the night will now be a fundraiser benefiting local musicians.
To that end, we’ve created The Hobey Fund, named after our little statuette. As the wrath of Sandy started coming to light, we were hearing more and more tales of musicians near and dear to the Hoboken scene who lost so much. And some who lost everything. We know that there are plenty of funds and charities to give to and helping any of them is a wonderful thing. We just felt that not enough attention has been given to musicians, studios, venues, etc who were devastated by this storm.
Therefore we’ve decided that this year’s Hoboken Music Awards night will be a fundraiser to benefit musicians hit hardest by the storm. While handing out awards is fun, we think this is a better way to celebrate local music at this time. We will be handing out awards at a later date. Those details will come soon.
In the meantime, come to Maxwell’s on November 17, 2012 and show your support.
