‘Starchild’ opens with the signature intricate guitar work that attracted me to the music of Bern & the Brights in the first place. Then the haunting and compelling voice of Bernadette Malavarca pulls you in as the choreography of differing styles eventually blends and builds into a kaleidoscope of rhythm, melody and harmony.

Is it any wonder why I love this band? They inspire me to fits of unbridled poetic waxing when all I’m really trying to say is, “Fuck it! I like it! Go buy it!”

The band is releasing the single on 7-inch vinyl (whose b-side is the summery warm feeling ‘Lost In The Sea’) appropriately enough on Record Store Day (April 16, 2011). To celebrate the release, you have two chances to catch them live on that day.

At 4:00 at Tunes (225 Washington St, Hoboken) for an in-store acoustic performance. At 8:00, catch them full-on electric at Maxwell’s (1039 Washington St, Hoboken) with My Pet Dragon, The Defending Champions, and Old Wives (RSVP on Facebook).

On that day, you can also take part in the impromptu audience participation that has come to be part of the ‘Starchild’ life outside of this recording. See (hear) you there!
