The Boss Turns 60 Today

Happy birthday Bruce Springsteen

Can you believe this guy is 60? Love or hate him, there is no denying the cultural impact of Bruce Springsteen. With a career that spans four decades, there’s a little something there for everyone to grab hold of. The folk singer, the corny pop star, the rocker, the activist, the dad, that dude from Jersey, the working class hero.

I prefer the rocker and the man was on fire in the 70s. Saxophone aside, he truly tore shit up. As a guitarist, he has always been severely underrated. On the 1978 album ‘Darkness on the Edge of Town’ (which has very little saxophone), his chops truly shine. That’s not to downplay the subtle genius of his rhythmic style.

The title track is one of my favorites. Growing up in Fairview, NJ, my friends and I would freak out at the third line. I swear you can hear some of them cheer in this classic clip from the old Capital Theater in Passaic, NJ (9/19/78).

I wasn’t at the show, but I sure wished I was. I recorded it off the radio onto an 8-track tape and wore that damned thing out. Back then, more than any other time, Bruce was NJ’s hero son. Who could’ve seen what the future held?
