Just as I was asking why the U.S. government is unwilling to debate Israel’s role in Middle East violence, a brilliant plea by Brian Eno was brought to my attention.

Eno is known for giving the world meditative music aimed at soothing the soul as well as helping to create and nurture the sound of U2. Now he is using his words in an effort to soothe — or at the very least understand — the ongoing and growing unrest in Gaza.

Unlike the U.S. government, Eno is looking to hold Israel accountable for what he defines as an experiment in provocation.

There is a fascinating video, accompanied by a brief essay written by Eno on Arthur Magazine‘s site. Here is an excerpt:

It’s a tragedy that the Israelis — a people who must understand better than almost anybody the horrors of oppression — are now acting as oppressors. As the great Jewish writer Primo Levi once remarked “Everybody has their Jews, and for the Israelis it’s the Palestinians”.
