Follow You, Follow Me
I wonder if Phil Collins has a Twitter account
About ten months ago I was introduced to Twitter. It's a tool meant to keep friends up to date on each other's lives through quick, simple text messages sent to their phones or on the Twitter website. For whatever reason–most likely laziness on my part–I never used it. However, the other day I finally saw the potential in this thing for updates and such.
The beauty is in the simplicity. All you do is set up a free Twitter account and a network of friends. You can follow them (you get their updates), they can follow you (they get your updates) or both. Send any message you like (such as telling folks when a super wonderful website has been updated) as long as it's under 140 characters. This is text messaging after all.
More than just a way to keep in touch (or annoy, or entertain), this thing can come in handy for nights out. Have you ever tried to text a bunch of people to let them know that plans have changed or whatever? It can be a real pain in the ass. With this Twitter thing, you can send one text to one number and everyone on your list gets the message.
And if you hate texting or (like me) have clumsy thumbs, you don't need to use your phone. You can send updates thru the Twitter website, IM or any one of an ever-growing list of third-party applications. Plus you can block and report spammers. Then again–like any social networking site–you choose who's in your network. So choose well.
No, I do not have any affiliation with Twitter. I simply like when ways to keep in touch come along that can actually make my life easier. So much technology that's out there is needlessly dense and complicated. Twitter is simple, secure and FREE. So go, sign up. I will follow you. Will you follow me?
