Music Spotlight: ‘Keeping Score’ by Yeobo

The blending of various musical aesthetics creates a vibe of escapism and fantasy

Yeobo is an instrumental trio from California’s Central Coast (Monterey, Santa Cruz). The climate and close proximity to the ocean are apparent in their sound. Blending surf with prog, funk with ethereal, goth with world music. It may not have words but there’s both an energy and a depth that speak volumes. It’s got a feel-good quality. Your foot taps and you smile as you listen. There’s a groove and an ease that run throughout the tracks.

The name ‘Yeobo’ comes from the Korean word for ‘honey’ or ‘sweetheart’. A term of endearment that can be felt in the music. ‘Keeping Score’ is the band’s debut full-length release, available on Bandcamp. It was released on Valentine’s Day which is appropriate considering the name of the band.

The video for their first single ‘Vice’ showcases drummer Jenn Robey’s connection to the ocean inspired by her work as Senior Content Creator at the Monterey Bay Aquarium. It’s a collaboration with Director of Photography Erika Straud and features projected images of sea creatures as the band performs as well as underwater footage of a local diver shot by Straud. Check it out below.

I really liked the vibe of escapism and fantasy in their sound and I think you will, too. Show your support at the links below.

Cheers!
