Yes, you read that title correctly. MEUTE are a Techno Marching Band from Germany and they are exactly as their name suggests. An eleven-piece ensemble that deconstructs elements of a DJ set and recreates them live on brass and percussion. No pretense. Just pure musical fun bringing electronic music into an acoustic realm. Their unique renditions of dance tracks have won them much deserved international praise.

Formed in 2015, MEUTE have performed their driving beats and hypnotic textures around the globe. Thanks to their marching-band instrumentation, they can play any type of venue, with or without electricity. This also gives them a rare advantage to share their brand of visceral energy instantly with a crowd. Practically in direct contact and allowing for exceptional performative connections. An opportunity most DJs simply don’t get to have.
Of course I can’t deny the sheer precision in their musicianship. Taking intricate elements of techno from the grips of technology and giving it new life in human hands. All the while retaining the clockwork timing and whirlwind of sound. Combine that with an innate sense of performance and you can see the appeal they have to their audience.
This is apparent in the video below of a 2023 performance in Hamburg, Germany where they were, “raving through the streets demanding a city for all.” Joined by local residents and The Young ClassX — vocalists from a local group working to promote children’s musical education. As the band moves through the streets, the sound grows steadily to another level and you can feel their connection to the community.

This closeness of performer to crowd is sadly missing in a lot of music today but thankfully there seems to be a growing movement among performers — and audiences — to bring back that primal need for real instruments, real people, and real live music.
