I discovered ‘Jungle Funk‘ (2025, Moonbase Disco) by Cihangir Eryıldız when a post was fed to my feed by our wise social robot overlords. This album blends soulful jazz, melancholic vocals, and trippy dubstep. The double-time beats under half-time bass grooves are reminiscent of old-school recordings by Jah Wobble and Bill Laswell. The vocals conjure warm, pleasant thoughts of Sade. The repetitive rhythms and minimalist instrumentation lull the listener in. The sparse, airy production is pristine as tone and texture dance across the stereo field.
Born in Istanbul Turkey, Cihangir Eryıldız’s father was a Turkish classical singer which heavily influenced his early introduction to music. At 9 years old, he started playing the Baglama, a long-necked fretted lute used in traditional Turkish folk music. Growing up he was drawn to a rich mix of jazz, classical, new wave and house music. In time, he began experimenting with the production and creation of electronic music. He became a DJ in the Istanbul club scene which of course further inspired his creativity.
‘Jungle Funk’ combines trip-hop, jazz-step, liquid-funk, and down-tempo styles made popular in the 90s to create a fresh, new sound. It’s filled with elements from around the world, with particular Japanese and jazz influences woven throughout. The music emotes an organic acceptance of the larger community of humankind around us. That message is clear thru the merging of many cultural factors.
