A CD of new material from Jehn Cerron

This was a happy day for 2 reasons. The first is the feeling you get on one special day late in the winter when you finally notice that the days are getting longer. The second was a wonderful surprise I had waiting for me in my mailbox when I got home. A warm smile spread over my face as I recognized the name on the return address.

I first met Jehn Cerron in the spring of 1999 when she was performing under the name ‘eyelight’ as part of the WE Fest in Wilmington NC. She was creating deep, rich vocal tapestries thru the use of two microphones and a series of digital delays. We were gathered outside in the relaxing Cape Fear breeze at a place called The Ice House (if memory serves me).

The WE Fest crowd is traditionally one of hard-ass, old-school punks out to drink beer, blowout eardrums and generally have a good ol’ time. At this moment however we were babes silently floating along waves of song. At the end there wasn’t a dry eye to be seen and our hush was shattered by a rousing ovation which seemed to overwhelm Jehn. Three years later I got to see her perform once again in Wilmington.

Today my heart fluttered as I opened the envelope and began listening to her new material. Other-worldly rhythms and lush keyboard texture leads into layered vocals delivering soft yet powerful melodies. These are complimented by the more simple moments of Jehn spinning her tales behind a piano.

This untitled CD—hand-marked only in black ink with Jehn’s email address—shows a growth that is at once unexpected and somehow consistent with her honest direction. She has added colors to her already fine palette but remained true to her voice. I just love when an artist can do that.
