A Chill Night at Lua (and after)

Saturday was a perfect night of relaxation. Lisa’s friend Johnnie and his girlfriend Sheena were up from Florida visiting. Sheena had never been to NYC. In fact, I don’t think she’d ever been out of Florida. I often take the grandeur of New York for granted.

Saturday was a perfect night of relaxation. Lisa’s friend Johnnie and his girlfriend Sheena were up from Florida visiting. Sheena had never been to NYC. In fact, I don’t think she’d ever been out of Florida. I often take the grandeur of New York for granted.

We went to Lua in Hoboken for dinner, drinks and fun conversation. It turned out that when Johnnie lived here, he knew a lot of the same club promoters that I did. Limelight, The Bank, The Red Zone and other places that most folks would never think I’d be. To tell the truth, if I didn’t know the promoters and if I didn’t get in for free, I’d have never gone. Still, they are fond past memories of nights of spirits and attempts at dancing.

I didn’t want to eat too much and the portions here are usually not too large. Except apparently for the pork roast. This was not just a plate, it was a platter … a regular mountain of meat. Try as I might, I could not finish. In fact Johnnie took a chunk after he finished his Filet Mignon and still not a dent was made. My only complaint about the dinner was when the busboy took my glass. Sure, it may have looked nearly empty. However, when you’re dealing with bourbon neat, you let the customer lick the glass dry. The child has much to learn.

At first the plan was for us to all hit a bar or club or something after dinner. I have to admit, after ingesting what felt like half the characters in Animal Farm, I was glad when we decided not to. I really enjoyed the evening getting to know this person who is such a major part of Lisa’s life. I would hear so much about him over the years. Of course the one fact that sticks in my brain is that he wrestles gators at Gatorland. Seriously.

After dropping Johnnie and Sheena off at his mother’s house, Lisa and I decided to head back to her place for a nice relaxing night of wine and DVDs. Well, the wine never happened. We would have just passed out anyway. Instead we entertained ourselves in one of our favorite ways. Running, jumping, climbing trees, putting on makeup when you’re up there. Actually we were watching Eddie Izzard’s ‘Dressed to Kill’. After which, we called it a night.

Who says a two-inch thick padding on metal bars can’t be comfortable? Luckily Lisa had a feather bed placed on top. Of course I felt really bad that poor, poor Lisa had to sleep on her 18″ thick, firm but cushy mattress. Poor girl. Plus I got to watch a bit of the movie Dragon Heart with Dennis Quaid and Sean Connery as the voice of the dragon. It’s a really cool animation/live action flick from 1996 that looks better than many such films that have come out since.

In the morning, Lisa drove me back to Hoboken and she was off to pick Johnnie and Sheena back up. She was throwing a dinner party for them and others in her family. I was going to a very odd party. Well, odd for me anyway.
