An art installation at Maxwell’s in Hoboken featuring Plexiglas Paintings by Brian Musikoff

You may know Brian Musikoff as the bassist of Stuyvesant or as that guy who gets you good and drunk at Louise & Jerry’s in Hoboken. He is also a very talented artist who has an installation at Maxwell’s (1039 Washington St, Hoboken). The collection of Plexiglas paintings is called Deny Everything and opening night was a huge hit.

I walked in figuring I’d be able to sit and eat, have a few drinks and mingle. Much to my delight, the place was way too packed to consider eating. I did get to have those few drinks and talk to some familiar and some new faces. But this night was not about my socializing, it was about Brian’s art.

It’s a collection of color-filled juxtaposition. The Death Star and a telephone, an Octopus careening a Hummer into a wave, a dessert swallowing school busses behind angry Tusken Raiders. My favorite piece was a parade of happy amplifiers looking like cartoon characters from the 1920s. That one, like many others, sold before the opening party was done.

So come out and get to know this other side of Brian if you’re not yet familiar with his art. He is also a cartoonist who runs an indie-comic publishing house called Manual Comics. The Deny Everything exhibit runs from August 13 – Sept 8, 2007 at Maxwell’s. If you’re lucky, there may still be some pieces left to buy.
