Ghosts of Gettysburg

I myself am not sure if I believe in ghosts, per se. But Gettysburg — thanks to it’s bloody history — is ripe with stories of hauntings.

At the edge of one particular battle site we heard stories of the mass burial, removal and reburying of soldiers. Their spirits still uneasy and unwilling to rest because of that turmoil. So I snapped away some more. We were told of these strange spheres that appear on the pictures taken in supposedly haunted places. Sure enough, these shapes or Orbs do appear on my images. What are they? Are they ghosts? Fragments of the spirits?

Well, theories abound but no one really knows. One theory is that these orbs are not the spirits themselves, but traces of the energy they use to make their presence known. This brings me back to my original thought that what we call ghosts or hauntings are simply the energy traces of a life gone by. Are these spirits aware that they are doing this. Well, that is the part we will never know. At least not until we are on the other side looking back.

Others will say that it is dust in the air or condensation on the lens. This is what I thought at first, but the images are not consistent enough to make that true. Whatever you may or may not believe, there is no doubt that these images are there. Images that don’t appear on any other pictures I’ve taken … ever.

At one moment Lisa and another person swore they saw the image of something off in the distance. I missed it because I had noticed Mars in the night sky. I tried to take a picture, but my camera was just not strong enough to do it. As much as I would have liked to see a ghost, I was happy to notice the red planet. At least that was a real and explainable sighting.

The next day, Lisa and I went for a tour of the battlegrounds. A very cool thing to do is pay $40.00 and a guide gets in your car and drives you throughout the site. It’s a 2 1/2 hour history lesson that honestly left my mind muddled.

While standing on a this one particular spot, we could smell campfire and pipe smoke. I looked for evidence of anything burning, but saw none. Lisa thought to ask the guide if any soldiers had camped here. He said yes. One thing that you will learn in studying the world of spirits is that many people smell and hear more mysterious things then they will see.

Yes, yes … the skeptic in me figured that there was a fire off somewhere in the distance and us being on a large open field were simply getting a whiff of it caught on a breeze.

Again, whatever the cause, this place is fascinating in its use of myth, fact and fear to create such an obscene level of tourist bait. I recommend a visit if just for the sheer fun of it all. Just watch your wallet in the gift shops.
