Street Meat Treat

Some of the best food served under an umbrella

When you hear me talk about street meat and dirty water dogs, they’re not insults. They’re terms of endearment given to those frightening looking but often delicious curbside vendors who serve up an array of tasty treats.

Some of the best food served under an umbrella

When you hear me talk about street meat and dirty water dogs, they’re not insults. They’re terms of endearment given to those frightening looking but often delicious curbside vendors who serve up an array of tasty treats. And if you think one vendor standing on cardboard and sweltering under an umbrella is like any other then you’ve been missing out.

One of the best of these treasures is located on the corner of 56th Street and 7th Avenue. The sign above says “John’s Favorites” and nothing costs more than $5.00. The burgers, chicken, shish kabob on pita (my favorite) and more have been nominated for a 2005 Vendy and a 2007 Snapple Best Stuff in NYC.

My friend Liz turned me on to this gem last week and I had to go again today. The meat is fresh, succulent, delicious, filling and beyond worth the price tag. A fine tribute to street meat everywhere, John’s cart is worth a visit. Just be prepared to wait because lines are often 8 to 10 people deep during lunch. You can always pass the time gazing upon the posters announcing upcoming events at Carnegie Hall.
