Sightseeing in Red Hook

My bad sense of direction results in a scenic side trip

I was on my way to The Hook (18 Commerce St, Brooklyn) to catch a bit of Cleveland Fest. I exited the ‘F’ train at Smith & 9th and, not surprisingly, began walking in the wrong direction. Friends can testify to my absolutely miserable sense of direction. I’m great with maps and but my inner compass tends to always be broken. Drop me on a street corner and tell me to go east or west or whatever and I quiver and drool like a lost puppy.

The good news today is that my mix up didn’t put me too far off course and brought me to the old industrial area that Red Hook was once best known for. Large warehouses and factory buildings line the streets of loud trucks with massive steal structures towering several stories above to carry the trains. It’s a shrinking area of a time gone by when Red Hook was an important port city. The movie ‘On The Waterfront’ was originally going to be filmed here under the title ‘The Hook’.
