The Jon and Dave (and Rob) Show

A night of fun, frolic and (of course) music at The Goldhawk

The hype behind this show had been building for weeks. The entire Hoboken community was buzzing with anticipation for this night of talent—and let’s face it—beauty. But these boys are more than just sexy eye candy, there’s music behind those designer clothes and well-rehearsed dance moves.

The hype behind this show had been building for weeks. The entire Hoboken community was buzzing with anticipation for this night of talent—and let’s face it—beauty. But these boys are more than just sexy eye candy, there’s music behind those designer clothes and well-rehearsed dance moves. And the songs are more than odes to hot chicks and night moves.

Well, that’s how they would probably want us to remember the night. The fact is they’re really not as pretty as they think they are. Still we can forgive their inner ego-driven divas. OK, OK … seriously … none of that happened. In truth this was a fantastic night of music put together by Jon D’Angelo and Dave Calamoneri. Every so often, they host these nights at The Goldhawk (936 Park Ave, Hoboken) that they call ‘The Jon and Dave Show’.

Opening the show was Rob Nicholas (or Robnick as many of us feel he should be called … but I digress). There is a hopeful bounce to Rob’s music. Something about it always makes me smile, even when the song is of a quieter feel. It’s a bit of Caribbean folk. He was joined for his last song by Jon D’Angelo which made for a smooth segue into Jon’s set.

There seemed to be an added fire in Jon’s already smokin’ guitar style. A bit louder and less restrained, his blues-driven songs cut thru the little room like a knife. He was joined by longtime collaborator Joe Jacovino blowin’ some amazing harp. Joe is also a regular here at The Goldhawk open mic nights.

I once describe Dave Calamoneri as a ‘true-grit troubadour’. His songs are real, down to earth tales of life that he delivers with an honest voice. In keeping with the running tradition of the night, Dave was joined by Rob, Jon, Joe and David Ribyat of the band Las Vandelays on mandolin for the set’s finale. The energy in the room felt like a giant smile.

This was truly a fun night and a great way to start the holiday weekend.
