Live @ Maxwell’s, Hoboken

I had seen David Childs a few times at the Goldhawk open mic but could never remember his name. Just before this show at Maxwell’s, I finally was able to place he name to the guy. I really admire his songs but more so his guitar style. He has a unique way of obtaining altered tunings. His guitar is in a standard tuning, but thru the use of two strategically placed capos, he gets his sound. One capo does the normal job of grabbing all the strings. The other was cut in a way to only affect a select few. David told me that you can buy sets like this, but he chose to cut his own. This was the first time I had seen him with a bad too. Very nice. You should check out his site www.davidchilds.com.

Also on the bill were Las Vandelays who I really like and The Misery Loves who I had seen acoustically a couple of times. I have to admit that I had always been on the fence about them. However as the set rocked on I began to dig the sixties-blues feel to their sound. They definitely won me over. I think someone else was playing too but I got there late so I’m not too sure.

I met a lovely girl named Emeri. I told her all about my latest plans to ditch the corporate life. What began as a humorous fantasy of traveling cross-country with my cat solving crimes has developed into a truly viable plan. What better way to seek out culture and write about it but to live mobile. Plus as time goes on I realize how the corporate world will be the death of me. Telling this to friends has garnered a variety of reactions. Most have been positive, some cautious and a few doubtful. However talking to Emeri, a total stranger who really seemed interested in my ideas, made them feel even more obtainable. She is involved in media as well so we have mutual interests in discovering new things.

The night ended with me chatting about politics with a couple of guys at the front bar. John is another of the talented regulars at the open mic. He has a very soulful, smooth style. Troy is someone I’ve known for a bunch of years now. He is convinced that I have a thing for our mutual friend Ray. This would be fine if I were in fact gay. The truth is I have a major crush on Ray’s fiancé. She is a real cutie. Troy has recently been performing at the open mics as well.

We rambled on and on about this and that. It was the kind of deeply rich and healthy debates that can only flourish in the atmosphere of a bar. I’m sure we solved all of the world’s horrors. It’s a shame that I can’t remember any of the details.
