Company Christmas Party

A bunch of us gather for a night of celebration

Three words that have been known to send shivers up the spines of employees everywhere. However, I personally enjoy these shindigs. Mainly due to the fact that most people think I’m a freak, so there is little chance that I’ll do anything to change that perception. This is usually the fear people have … that they will hear tales told about their drunken escapades the next morning.

Last night was a small affair thrown by the marketing department of one of the magazines whose websites I manage. We were at Pigalle (790 8th Ave, NYC). I had a really good time getting to meet with folks outside of the work zone.

You see, part of my job is to be a real hard ass with these people. We often clash but agree that it’s all just business. I think if we don’t do these types of out of office rendezvous more often, we would wind up killing one another. So a few of us have agreed to do just that. Hang more … not kill.

One coworker named Jane in particular surprised me with her taste in music. We chatted for quite a while about web-radio, indie music, the eighties and the undeniable sexiness of Simon LeBon. I’ve grown jaded over the years and rarely feel as though anyone in this corporate environment could ever ‘get me.’ I find from time to time, someone will come along and challenge that assumption.

Another is Beth who, despite our clashes, has also proven to have similar taste in music as me. She once heard me listening to Morphine and called me on it. She found it fascinating one day when she could hear David Gray coming out of my little plastic PC Speakers.

The three of us are trying to set up more time to hang and discuss whatever over a few cocktails. I may be amazed at how many people here in this corporate world actually do get me. I look forward to finding out. It’ll make yelling at them easier. Ah … they know I love them :)
