Karaoke can be fun. Karaoke in a bar with drunk friends can be even more fun. Karaoke in a bar with drunk friends and a live band can be super fun. And that’s what we had tonight at The Corkscrew (61 Congress St, Jersey City). My buddy Denis and I made our way up the elevator from Hoboken and strolled into a very loud, crowded bar. We were later met by our friend Troy.
As often as I find myself in the karaoke environment, I rarely partake in actually singing. But the over-the-top fun of such nights sucks me in every time and I’ll join in the festivities one way or another. Tonight our soundtrack was provided by the Super Karaoke Fun Time Band blowing thru a very impressive catalog of songs. Which I guess you need to be a karaoke band.
I don’t make it a habit of giving any publicity to cover bands, but this is a very different case. Most cover bands are thrown up on a stage and meant to buzz in the background while people party. Their purpose more often than not is to humor the intoxicated complacency in much the same way a jukebox would. Of course the difference here is that a karaoke audience is anything but complacent.
By the very nature of the experience, the whole room is involved. Aside from whoever is singing, you have the hecklers and supporters who at times can be more entertaining. But put a live band into the mix and the night is complete. And these guys not only can play, but have as much fun as the rest of us. Well, not as much fun as my buddy Troy who ripped the place up with ‘These Boots Were Made for Walkin”.
If you’re into Karaoke and have never experienced the whole inebriated mess being helped eagerly along by a live band, you really need to … and soon. And if singing is not your thing, come anyway. The people who hang and work at The Corkscrew kick ass and there’s pool, darts, TV and of course … cheap booze.
