Music at Sinatra Park

The Fave and Buzz Universe live outside with the Hudson River and New York City as the perfect backdrop.

Did you ever have that perfect bag of Skittles? It’s when some outer-body force steps in and makes the last handful of candy contain nothing more than one of each flavor. Grape, Lemon, Strawberry, Lime, Orange. As I sat looking at the colorful candy in my hand, I felt it was a sign that I was going to have a good night. And indeed I did.

I’ve said before that the city of Hoboken could do a better job of promoting local original music. Concerts like the one tonight at Sinatra Park are definitely a step in the right direction. However, they still need to step up their marketing. Putting in just half the energy as they do when mailing propaganda at election time would make it better. As it stands, the shows tend to only be promoted by the performers. Still, it’s a good start.

Sinatra Park is a wonderful spot for any show. You can’t ask for a better back drop than an early evening leading into sunset on the Hudson River. There’s the cafĂ© to get some grill food and soft drinks. On the nearby field was a volleyball tournament. There were joggers and bicyclists, moms pushing strollers and children playing near the water’s edge. We joked that the reason the population remains steady here is because for every child born, one falls in the river.

On top of it all, riding on the river breeze, there was music. First up was Buzz Universe. The last time I saw them was over three years ago in Red Hook, Brooklyn. Theirs is a blend of hippy jams, Latin flavor, jazz and funk. For the most part, I’m not a fan of jam bands because they tend to have no direction, but that’s not the case here. I enjoy their organic energy and synergy. Their grooves and musicianship will get your foot tapping before you even realize what’s happening.

As night fell, on came The Fave continuing their musical evolution and domination of the local scene. The children danced with more frenzy around the chalk designs drawn on the ground. Dom of The Fave caused a frenzy offering free candy. A swarm developed as the band tried to get back to the music. Once they did, the fun commenced enhanced by the band’s special blend of refreshment called ‘Hop, Skip and Go Naked’. I’m not sure what’s in it, but no one seemed to care.

Sponsoring this night of music was Court Street Restaurant & Bar (61 6th St, Hoboken). A bunch of us made our way to the bar where we played a friendly albeit rules-free game of Trivial Pursuit. My friend Denis popped out to get a pack of smokes and upon his return, he opened up a bag of Skittles on the bar for all of us to enjoy. This coincidence was the perfect way to end my night that started with a perfect bag of Skittles.
