The retraining of my social algorithms is working nicely as I keep getting introduced to young artists using classic techniques to create striking new work. The latest I’ve found is Studio Nokori (aka Jess). She creates abstract pieces in the style of the Bauhaus movement of the 20s & 30s with clean lines, bold colors and the idea of form following function. To that structure she mixes a touch of a traditional Japanese printmaking method to add a layer of freeform and soul to the otherwise precise lines.

I use primarily watercolor and ink, and seek to explore the tension
between chaos and order (what’s going on in my mind)
Jess has a bachelor’s degree in philosophy which — in my opinion — gives her the insight needed to add a level of humanity and emotion to her work. While there is obvious thought applied to the lines, colors, and shapes, there’s an element of storytelling that exists as well. Order and chaos sit side by side to bring out an entirely new story with each glance. As you gaze at a piece, chapters will unfold.
One thing about young artists like Jess that I find inspiring is the way they offer their work for sale, making the buyer feel like a part of their world. While you can buy Jess’s work from her website (studionokori.com), you can also become a member of her ‘Snail Mail Club’ on Patreon.

For $8 a month, members get an envelope that includes a 5×7 print of an original piece, either a Sudoku or word puzzle, a bookmark, and a letter exploring a philosophical theme. I applaud her talent and ingenuity.
Check out Studio Nokori and show this artist some love.
