‘Valentine’s Day Blob’ by Emmi Shields
The word ‘blob’ tends to conjure images of black and white b-movie horror with cheap effects and overacting. Well, for me anyway. Not in the hands of a talented young artist named Emmi Shields, however. Her pieces are filled with playful expression. Colors swirl and dance. The striking and intense focus of the eyes (yes . . . eyes) leaps off the canvas, drawing the viewer closer and coaxing a smile.

Emmi is able to give these malleable creatures a life filled with elements of movement and delight. A freeform motion of the lines blend with brightly colored forms. They morph in their surrounding space, floating weightless with their eyes always intensely watching the watcher.
