Plus my usual late night antics …
The Negatones show at Pianos in NYC was an energy filled blast. You can tell they were having as much fun as the rest of us. Their set was packed with the usual sonic assaults hat hey have become famous for in the NYC scene.
Playing with them was Gene Dreamy and Gary Sincere though they kept referring to themselves as Kapow. Upon each utterance of which you had to punch the person next to you.
They filled the in between banter with tales of syphilis, donkeys and first show jitters. Jay and Justin of the Negatones were playing in this band too. I found this out as I ran into Tris McCall and asked if he had see the guys yet. To which he pointed and said, “They’re on stage.”
I didn’t recognize them without their usual ‘costumes’ (large pimp hats, Elton John style sunglasses, bright colored shiny shirts, etc.). Tonight it was if we were in their basement all getting a private show. I unfortunately left before the last band Demander played.
Even though I was a bit under the weather, I decided to stop at Louise & Jerry’s for a night cap when I got back to Hoboken. This of course ended up with a bunch of hanging out all night. Inevitably, a night at L&J’s is often followed by an ‘after party’ at a nearby apartment.
This time, after a brief stop at McDonald’s for a Double Quarter Pounder with Cheese (hey … when I’m hungry …), we went to the apartment of High Speed Chase bassist Lava.
There we watched the progress of Hurricane Rita, Listened to Killing Joke and had a chill night. He was showing off his P-Bass to everyone (well we the guitar geeks in the room) since he had just had a bunch of work done on it. I found it to be amazingly light on my shoulders.
Among the late night revelers was Irene Smith who recently wrote a wonderful letter to the press in support of local music. It was sparked by the success of the Hoboken Rocks Pier A show in September and the unfortunate politics that exist in town. You can read her letter here.
I walked home in the (finally) nice autumn-like cool night. And … woke up sick today. Oh well. I’ve been sleeping all day and feel much better now. Gonna probably hang low on the old sofa tonight.
