[audio:http://www.stephenbailey.com/audio/rogues-march/02 Shut Up and Drink.mp3|autostart=no]Gravel-voiced crooner Joe Hurley and Rogue’s March gave the world of dark, smoky pubs this jukebox gem in the mid 90s. The smoke may be gone, but as the nights roll on and the pints flow steady, the sentiments of the chorus ring true:
Fuck everything
Shut up and drink
I don’t wanna hear your shit tonight
I don’t wanna think
Back in the prehistoric days before buying my overly ostentatious 160gb iPod, my trusty old 20gb iRiver MP3 player seemed to have a unnatural affinity for this song. Each time I added anything new, the player would reset to play ‘Shut Up and Drink’. And if that wasn’t odd enough; I wound up having to replace that player three times. Each new player did the same exact thing.
I’ve had the pleasure of seeing Joe perform with Kristeen Young, James Mastro and Tony Visconti at the now defunct Baggot Inn, as well as enjoying a few cocktails with the man on a booze cruise sponsored by MurphGuide.com. But in the end, this song will undoubtedly conjure up memories of that possessed MP3 player.
